December 13, 2016 Skyview-on-the-Hudson Tree Bench
This project was built for the new Skyview-on-the-Hudson playground in the Bronx, NY. The octagonal bench measures 9' in diameter and it sits atop a 16' diameter platform that was built to protect the roots of the tree. This project was constructed using a combination of treated lumber for the frames, cedar decking and bark-on eastern red cedar trees and branches. It was built entirely at our workshop in Saugerties, NY then dismantled, delivered, and installed on site. The bench offers a comfortable and unique area to sit while the kids play.

November 10, 2016 Skyview-on-the-Hudson Entrance Arbor
This was our first installment for the new Skyview-on-the-Hudson playground in the Bronx, NY. It is an entrance arbor measuring 11.5' long x 10' wide x 11.5' high and is built almost entirely using bark-on eastern red cedar trees and branches. Family's will pass through the arbor to enter and leave the playground. It was built at our shop then dismantled and delivered to be erected on site. Amazingly we were able to get the entire structure to fit on a 12' trailer.

November 20, 2016 Kirkside Park, Roxbury, NY
This is one of six bridges we built at Kirkside Park in Roxbury, NY. The bridge spans a 40' wide section of the East Branch Delaware River.
We wrapped three iron railroad beams with treated lumber then built a deck on top using rough sawn white oak 2x8x8's. The eastern red cedar decorative rails were built in advance at our
shop then installed on site. This bridge was a replacement of a bridge we built over 15 years ago that eventually succumbed to the elements of nature. Kirkside Park is a 14 acre park originally conceived around 1905 that featured several rustic bridges. In the following years the original bridges and the park suffered decades of neglect until the community saved it from developers. The town of Roxbury eventually took over the property and returned it to it's original beauty. Romancing the Woods was lucky enough to be given the contract to rebuild and maintain all six of these bridges.

August 3, 2016 Larchmont Pergola
With all of the materials prepped and cut to size before we arrived, we were able to have this beautiful pergola installed in a little over 6 hours. The final footprint was 16' long x 10' deep with an overall height of a little over 8'. It was built entirely using bark-on eastern red cedar trees and branches, and will soon have wisteria vines on the corners making for a fantastic dining experience.

July 2, 2016 Shop Update and The Country Living Fair
The last few months have been quite busy for Romancing the Woods. We spent the months leading up to June preparing some work for display at the Country Living Fair in Rhinebeck, NY. Since we do not carry stock items all the work that we brought to the show was previously sold. The work that we completed to bring to the show included a large curved bench for Poet's Walk Park, a mountain laurel bench for Olana Historic Site, three rustic benches for private clients, and a beautiful pair of garden tepees. The first week of June we were honored to be the highlight for a front page article in the Northern Dutchess News. The article discussed Romancing the Woods as well as the Country Living Fair. Soon after the show everything needed to be delivered and installed to their final homes in and around the Hudson Valley area.

May 28, 2016 Poet's Walk Park, Red Hook, NY
This was a beautiful place to work. We had to hike the materials in quite a distance but the view was worth it. If you haven't been to Poet's Walk Park in Red Hook, NY be sure to put it on your list of things to do this summer. This location features 78' of brand new fencing, a couple of our 5' Sunburst benches, a rustic summerhouse (not built by us), and of course the Hudson River. It's a little under a mile in from the parking lot off of River Road.

February 28, 2016 Brancale Railings
This project was started in the spring of 2015. All of the materials had to be stripped of it's bark, which was done using a pressure washer and a lot of patience. After the bark was removed we let the materials dry for awhile before we could continue our prep work. With all knots carefully chiseled, materials cut to length, and two coats of tung oil applied we were finally ready to start our installation. The staircase had already existed when we arrived, and there was a lot of planning involved to get our railings incorporated in a way that met local building codes without sacrificing too much of the aesthetics. Working within the 4" ball code can be a little restricting. I believe in the end the final results speak for themselves. |
February 13, 2016 Midler Benches
Here's a few images of some outdoor benches we are currently working on for the Midler estate. We have one more bench to build as well as a large bench swing before we can deliver and install them. The bench designs are recreations at different sizes of previous benches we have built over the years. The first image is our 'Couple's Bench' which measures 5'-8" long and features an eastern red cedar table in the middle. The second bench is our 'Putnam' bench design and measures 5' long. It is built using a combination of eastern red cedar and mountain laurel. The third is a 4' bench titled the 'Taconic' and the fourth is a 5' bench titled 'Falling Waters'. Both benches are named after the locations they were originally designed for.
